13 January 1996 - Portugal: Pinhão - Peso da Régua - Lousado - Porto

"The interplay between rail and river." That is the theme of the tour along the Douro. The Douro valley is world famous for its port. In the past, port boats sailed along this river to the city of Porto. Now trains, both modern and antique locs, perform this task.

20 January 1996 - Sri Lanka: Galle - Hikkaduwa - Colombo - Kandy - Nanu Oya

The rails wind their way through the humid tropics to beautiful temples and busy cities, including the capital Colombo. An old steam locomotive collapses during a mountain trip, where travelers come face to face with a herd of bathing elephants.

This train journey takes us past masterpieces in the architecture of antiquity. The beautiful mountain country passes by. Various archaeological sites are visited in Athens. Along Mount Olympus, people travel to Thessaloniki to view the most recent excavations.

The journey starts in the modern, tourist resorts by the sea, including a stop in Havana, the island's capital. A beautiful and fascinating country, swinging to the rumba rhythm. The final station is Pinar del Rio, where thousands of Cubans work on the tobacco plantations.

During the tour, the history and culture of the country are told and attention is paid to the various sights. INTERVIEWS with: - train traveler about shopping with the train; - George McKenzie (distillery) on the importance of the waterfall's water for whiskey distilleries; - Robin Purdon, driver, about the steam train that is used in the summer months.
